Concept: Jesus Christ Superstar is the story of “Jesus”, a rock and roll superstar who’s persona is inspired by Renaissance/Baroque depictions of Jesus Christ. As his reputation and influence grows, so too does his pride. At the peak of his career he finds his world becoming more and more familiar; it is in Gethsemane that he realizes God has ordered events to recreate Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, substituting “Jesus” into similar circumstances.
As his final moments play out, “Jesus” finds himself in a divinely created horror inspired by his hubris, for a mortal man could never actually live up to Jesus Christ.
